White, pink or brown noise: which one for sleep?

What does research say about white and pink noise?
A 2022 systematic review included 34 auditory-stimulation studies with 1,103 participants. Some white- and pink-noise studies reported positive sleep outcomes, but methods and study quality varied considerably. Review.
A 2026 randomized laboratory trial tested pink noise and earplugs against intermittent environmental noise. In 25 healthy adults, pink noise reduced some fragmentation effects but also worsened some aspects of sleep architecture. Trial.
What about brown noise?
Brown noise is popular online, but clinical evidence specifically showing better night-time sleep is much thinner. It should not be presented as scientifically superior for sleep, focus or anxiety without clearly stating that limitation.
How to test it
- Reduce the real noise source first.
- If masking is still useful, keep volume low and steady.
- Use the same sound for several nights.
- Track sleep onset, awakenings, comfort and morning state.
- Stop if it becomes irritating or requires increasingly high volume.
WHO safe-listening guidance emphasizes both sound level and duration. For any overnight audio device, use no more volume than needed and avoid placing a loud speaker directly beside the ear.
