Night noise and sleep: why do some sounds wake us?

Key point. Environmental noise, especially transportation noise, is associated with more sleep disturbance. Intermittent and unpredictable sounds can be especially disruptive. Reducing the source is therefore the first priority before adding masking noise.

Noise can disturb sleep without a remembered awakening

A 2026 meta-analysis found that environmental noise, particularly road, rail and aircraft traffic, increases the risk of sleep disturbance with a dose-response relationship. Evidence for other community noise is more limited but points in the same direction. Meta-analysis.

Intermittent noise is different from a steady background

A door slam, passing motorcycle or short burst of neighbour noise can be more disruptive than a steady sound at the same average level because the auditory system responds strongly to changes and salient events.

The Sleeple order of action

  1. Reduce the source where possible.
  2. Reduce transmission with seals, heavier curtains, rugs or building changes when relevant.
  3. Use personal protection such as well-fitted earplugs if needed.
  4. Test masking sound only when the previous steps are insufficient.

White noise is not automatically the answer

A 2020 systematic review of 38 studies found very-low-quality evidence that continuous white or broadband noise improves sleep, with studies reporting both benefit and disruption. Review.

A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized trials reported more favourable results in several populations but still noted substantial heterogeneity. That supports individual testing rather than universal claims. Meta-analysis.
