Can sleep trackers really measure REM and deep sleep?
Key point. Consumer trackers do not directly record brain waves. They classify stages from indirect signals. That can be useful for trends, but it is not equivalent to polysomnography.
How are sleep stages measured clinically?
Polysomnography combines brain activity, eye movements, muscle tone, respiration and other signals to score wake, light sleep, deep sleep and REM using standardized criteria.
How does a wearable estimate stages?
Most consumer devices rely on movement, heart-rate-related signals and sometimes other physiological measurements. Algorithms then classify patterns into stage labels.
What do recent validation studies show?
A study comparing Oura Ring Gen3, Fitbit Sense 2 and Apple Watch Series 8 with polysomnography in 35 healthy adults found high sleep/wake sensitivity but variable stage performance. Study.
Another validation of six wearables reported stage kappa values from 0.21 to 0.53, indicating fair-to-moderate agreement depending on device. Study.
How to use REM and deep-sleep data
- focus on multi-week trends;
- do not overreact to one night;
- do not try to “maximize” one stage mechanically;
- do not replace medical assessment with a wearable graph.
