What does a sleep score really mean?
What usually goes into a sleep score?
Depending on the device, the score may include sleep duration, regularity, awakenings, heart rate, heart-rate variability or estimated sleep stages. Weightings vary by company.
Why the number can mislead
If the device misjudges sleep onset or wake periods, the final score can shift. Even with perfect inputs, the formula is still a design choice, so two brands can rate the same night differently.
Best use: follow trends
- compare weeks rather than isolated nights;
- prioritize bedtime and duration before complex sub-scores;
- record how you actually feel in the morning;
- do not overhaul several habits just to gain a few points.
When tracking becomes counterproductive
For some people, trying to perfect every metric can increase preoccupation with sleep. The term “orthosomnia” has been used to describe excessive pursuit of perfect sleep driven by tracker data. The score should remain a tool, not the goal.
A simple Sleeple rule
If your score falls while you feel well and your routine is stable, do not automatically treat the number as a problem. Conversely, persistent sleepiness or non-restorative sleep deserves attention even when the app gives you a high score.
