Sleep and memory: how does the brain consolidate learning?
Sleep does not replace learning, but it helps stabilize some information acquired while awake. Its contribution depends on the type of memory, sleep timing, and individual factors.
Encoding, consolidation, and retrieval are different
Encoding is the initial acquisition of information. Consolidation is its stabilization over time, while retrieval is the ability to access it later. The NIH explains that sleep before learning helps prepare the brain and sleep afterward helps strengthen newly formed memories.
Sleep alone cannot create learning. Understanding, active practice, and spaced retrieval still determine what is available to consolidate.

Cutting several hours of sleep to extend passive revision can combine weaker encoding with less post-learning sleep. A more realistic approach is to prioritize material, use active retrieval, and preserve a sleep opportunity compatible with your needs.
